Who are Anglo Indians? Know their History

A lot of times, we hear term Anglo Indians. Today, we will discuss who are they and what is their origin?  According to Article 366(2) of the Constitution, Anglo Indian is considered someone who lives in India and whose father or any male ancestors belong to the European lineage.  Notably, the term is used for British People who are working in India and belong to the Indian origin community. The term is defined in the Government of India Act, 1935.

Here a few important things that you need to know about Anglo Indians:

India is the largest democracy in the world. The Parliament of the country compromises of Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, and the President. India is ‘Union of State’ that is why members of Parliament are elected from all across the nation. Let us take a look at how numbers are divided in Lok Sabha:

Maximum Strength is – 552

Current Strength is – 545

The division is as follows:

530 states+ 20 Union Territories +2 Anglo Indians

If there is no member is elected from Anglo Indian Community then President of India is authorized to nominate 2 members of this community for the Lok Sabha.

How Anglo Indians Term came to India?

There is an interesting story behind the arrival of Anglo Indians.  It was reported when the British were laying rail tracks and telephone lines in India. They were called to India due to their technological knowledge. Later on, these people married Indian girls and got settled in our country.

Interestingly, Most of the Anglo Indians were closely associated with Indian Railways that is why they still called themselves ‘Railway Children’.

Interesting facts :

  1. Anglo Indian Community created its own organization which is called ‘The All India Anglo – Indian Association in 1876
  1.  Frank Anthony was the chairman of this organization
  1. Article 331 was added to the constitution due to his continuous efforts. Notably, he was nominated to the Lok Sabha 7 times just because of his efforts that he made for article 331. As per Article 331, President of India is authorized to nominate at least 2 People.
  1.  It is important to note that Anglo Indian is the only community of India whose representatives are sent to Parliament and Legislative Assemblies through the nomination
  1. Keep in mind that nominate members to have all those powers, which are enjoyed by a common MP.
